St. Johns River Cleanup

May 7, 2016 @ 8:00 am - 12:00 pm

St. Johns River Cleanup 2016 is a volunteer-based cleanup of the St. Johns River and other contributing waterways throughout the St. Johns River Water Management District in Brevard County. The event is scheduled for Saturday, May 7, from 8:00 a.m. to noon.  Keep Brevard Beautiful, Inc. has sponsored the cleanup for the past ten years. Locally, Waste Management of Florida provides management of the debris collected by volunteers. The cleanup helps people to see their connection to this important water system.  Many volunteers are needed for this trash cleanup, especially kayakers and boaters who are willing to search the shorelines of the St. Johns River.  Actions by each person contribute to the health of the watershed, which covers a 12,400 square mile area.  What one does to any part of the watershed drains to the river and its surrounding ecosystem, affecting the entire river.

Volunteers participating in the event should wear durable clothing appropriate to the weather, old shoes, and bring any of the following items they may want to use: Rakes, garden carts, nets, jon boats, kayaks, canoes. Pickup trucks are needed for hauling debris.

KBB site captains hand out supplies of trash bags and gloves.  Please check in at a site between 8-9 a.m. and return supplies to a site captain by noon. For more information and to sign up, please call Bryan Bobbitt at 631-0501 x 203 or email him at bryanbobbittkbb@yahoo.com.

Check-In Sites are as follows:

1. 1000 Tucker Rd. and Providence, Hwy 520 West of I-95, in Cocoa, turn south at McDonald’s

2. Barge Canal at Route 3 – Merritt Island
