School Environment Awards

The School of the Month Environment Award program is a partnership between Keep Brevard Beautiful, Brevard County Public Elementary Schools and Northrop Grumman Corp. The program is designed to encourage students’ environmental efforts and instill pride in the appearance of their campuses. Participation is fun, educational and rewarding for students, teachers, administrators and school volunteers. The program focuses on campus beautification, environmental and recycling projects and encourages students to make a commitment to a litter free school. A volunteer judge visits each school every month to evaluate the school’s participation.

Points are given in the areas of: cleanliness (amount of litter seen around campus), creative projects (special environmental projects such as plays, posters, poems, arts and crafts, songs, classroom activities, etc.), recycling projects, and additional landscaping or beautification projects. All the scores from participating schools are tallied and the three schools in each area with the highest score win the SEA sign and certificate for that judging period.

Schools may select any grade level to serve as the program leader for implementing SEA programs. A coordinating teacher will complete the “Summary Sheet” (download below) explaining any special projects or activities initiated in the previous month to be considered for the award. Judging for each award period will be in the second week of the month prior to the award month. Schools will need to have implemented school environmental awareness instruction and cleaned their school grounds before each judging period.

Awards begin the first week of October and continue through May. Winning schools will have an award sign posted in front of the school and will receive a framed certificate commemorating the award. At the end of the school year, environmental prizes worth $100 will be awarded to the top scoring school in each of the north, central and south areas of the county, and a $50 cash prize will be awarded to the second highest scoring schools from each of the three areas.
