2015 Sustainability Awards winner: Brevard Parks and Rec (government)
Brevard County Parks and Recreation is honored for “The Biggest Loser”
The goal of the Biggest Loser project is to increase awareness of the amount of lunch waste generated and to reduce the amount of this waste through education and increased access to zero-waste lunch practices. The project reached out to 500 elementary school students providing them with lunch waste reduction education and a special, reuseable sandwich wrap to reduce plastic sandwich bag waste. Although a goal of 15% waste reduction was set for the program, an average of 50% percent was reduction was achieved following the program.
Following implementation in Brevard schools, the program was presented at the Florida Marine Science Educators Conference. The attendees at this session were given the tools to implement this program at their own schools or institutions.
