Space Coast Field of Dreams Wins KBB We Noticed Award
Keep Brevard Beautiful’s (KBB) South Action Team presented the “We Noticed” Award to south Brevard’s newest addition to special needs recreation, the Space Coast Field of Dreams. This highly unique play area and multi-sports park is located in West Melbourne and received the award on June 21. An all-volunteer board coordinated this massive undertaking starting in 2007 by creating Brevard County Field of Dreams, Inc., and the park has been open to the public since 2015. The goal of the park is to have universal access for special needs users of all kinds while utilizing sustainable construction practices, environmentally-friendly operation, and ease of operation. In approximately one year, five acres were converted into a concession and restroom facility, baseball, soccer and basketball facilities, a covered flexible-use pavilion, and two universal access playgrounds that were created and decorated by children. Throughout the park are LED lights, water-conserving fixtures, and recycled products. Over 37,000 pounds of plastics, 69,000 pounds of rubber, and 16 million pounds of concrete were reused to create the Field of Dreams. This undertaking was primarily developed and paid for by the City of West Melbourne, Brevard County, State of Florida Department of Economic Opportunity and Waste Management plus over $1 million in local private contributions.
Attending the “We Noticed” presentation were Jennifer Wilster, KBB Executive Board member; KBB staff; South Action Team members; and the Board members of Space Coast Field of Dreams.
The South Action Team recognizes property- and business-owners throughout the southern part of Brevard County year-round for their efforts to beautify the area and environmentally improve their landscaping. The program has been in operation since the 1990’s and has recognized dozens of properties throughout the County.
